All I need is Nuxe and a little imagination …

So it’s 20°F in New York City, but if you ask me, it’s feeling more like -5°F! All I can think about is being somewhere sunny…

But instead I’m stuck with extra layering, a stuffy nose, and not to mention, dry skin… So in efforts to calm my winter blues I picked up the Nuxe: Creme Fraiche Moisturizing Energizing Emulsion (Dry) tester and viola *does a French accent* :P  a moisturizer that does the job ALL day! It goes on light and has a fresh and clean smell that wont irritate the skin. We’re talking 24hr moisture that won’t leave that 3 sweater layering feeling on your face. :) Eight Plant Milks and four balancing Essential Oils that leave my skin oh so refreshed and hydrated in the cold winter wind. This  2.1 fl oz jar of goodness helps trap water deep within the skin to replenish the skin with ongoing moisture.

So maybe I can’t turn snow to sand and I won’t be able to go tanning anytime soon but with a little help from our friends at NUXE Paris and my Mac, I can always be at the beach when the sun is about to set. ;)

My Wish-list: A few Suggestions for You Holiday Shoppers

Holidays are near, and were all running around looking for that perfect gift for those lucky few. So we, here at Thompson Alchemists, are posting our own holiday wish list to give you a few gift suggestions. Heres a few things of what I would like under my tree…

The first item on my wish list is a NEW Astara productthe Astara AHA Nutrient Toning Essence which doubles as a quick cleanser,  perfect for those on the go! The grapefruit essence will not only hydrate the skin, locking in the moisturizer, but also minimize your pores.  Astara is my favorite skincare line because its good for all ages, so listen up last minute shoppers, you can get this for the whole family!

Next on my wish list are the very prettily packaged SedaFrace candles and soaps so pretty you can forget about the extra gift wrapping… but for those of you that like the gift wrapping, stop by Alchemists or Chemists and we’ll provide FREE gift wrapping with any purchase all through the holidays! :) My favorite happens to be The Asian Pear Three-Wick Candle Tinbut I guarantee that all of their fragrances will make for a great smelling gift.

Now for the Stocking Stuffers ! What I hope to find in my stocking is Essie Good to Go Top Coat; now this will be a life saver because I always seem to convince myself that 2 minutes is enough drying time  ( lies… :(  ) and have to reapply my nail polish millions of times after messing up my nails. So if you know someone abusing nail polish coats  get them this top coat that will dry their nails in seconds. Another great stocking stuffer is the Lioele Eyeshadow Stick. These eyeshadow sticks are great for new makeup users. The fun, fresh, vibrant colors, my favorite the Light Pink ,  really pop, K POP ;)

Died and went to exfoliating heaven …

How do we remove those dead skin cells, dirt and all that other icky stuff without damaging our skin? Once again my favorite skincare line, Astara, has come to the rescue with Astara Daily Refining Scrub. Providing the best solution for exfoliation without irritating the skin. Sensitive skin? Use this with a little bit of Astara Botanical Cleansing Gelé to create an amazing lather and alter the level of abrasiveness. Lets not forget I’m all about the pleasing the senses. Its fresh grapefruit essence not only refreshes the skin but the therapeutic aroma HELLO! And the texture has to be my favorite part of the experience, as you rub this onto your fingers you feel the finest grains and I mean toes in the sand fine grains! This scrub is so pure and gentle that it, just like all the other Astara products, can be used interchangeably with all your other skin care lines. The antioxidants, the hydration, the exfoliation, how can you not love Astara?

P.s I must warn you that you might never use any other scrub again! :)

Trailblazing Anthelios

Anthelios just released its’ newest sunscreen. A Mineral one with a SPF of 50. IT is a 100% mineral UV system containing  11% Titanium Dioxide blended in a powerful anti-oxidant complex of  CELL-OX SHEILD. This patented formula protects your skin in two ways. It helps defend against UVA and UVB rays while providing a powerful antioxidant made with Senna Alta, a tropical leaf known to protect skin cells.

This ultra light fluid sunscreen protects the skin without leaving a whitening texture, as many mineral sunscreens tend. With its uniform absorption to the cellular level it leaves skin feeling hydrated and soft. Its matte finish makes it suitable for use under make-up. This revolutionary formula has left the world of sunblock all abuzz as a lightweight mineral sunscreen had yet to be created…

Shake well before using, apply evenly and don’t forget to reapply in after swimming or perspiring.

Glossary & Key Facts:

SPF – “Sun Protection Factor” measures the degree of protection a sunscreen has against UVB rays only.

Smooth Sailing with Clark’s Botanicals

Clark’s Botanicals is one of those lines that sells itself on its “story.” Created by a young man who experienced chronic break outs following an accident which left him “unable to walk or even sweat,” Clark’s has developed from a home-grown remedy to a much loved skincare line. The aim of the line is “rebalance” the skin and it is formulated to work for a variety of skin types.

I’ve been using Clark’s Smoothing Marine Cream as my night cream for the past week and I have come to love this product. Obviously they’re more than just a good story; this stuff is worth its salt. Because I have sensitive skin I opted to use this exfoliating cream only once a day. It does tingle slightly when applied, kind of like the way it feels to use lemon on your skin (does anybody do that anymore???) but I have not experienced any redness or adverse reactions since I’ve been using it. Instead, I find that my skin is renewed, refreshed, rehydrated and smoothed. The cream is rich, much richer than it seems, and my dry skin loves it! It has also improved the tone of my skin and has also helped fade some acne scars.

Marine Smoothing Cream

All in all it gets two thumbs up from me!

Clark’s Botanicals Marine Smoothing Cream, 1.7 fl oz, $115.00

Have people ever asked you if you had dandruff? Actually, for most people its dry scalp. I kept complaining to my parents that people kept saying I had dandruff when it was just dry scalp! I asked if there was anything I could so then they gave me Philip B Anti Flake. By the time I went to school the next day, it was gone..GONE! I am so happy that now I use it everyday. Now, none of my classmates tell me that I have dandruff in school anymore thanks to Philip B :) !

Astara: Skincare in the raw

The range of Astara products we carry

Sometimes things just all fall into place. That’s what happened when Andrea DeSimone walked into Thompson Chemists a few weeks ago. Andrea, in addition to being a licensed aesthetician, also represents a line of clean, minimally processed “raw” skincare  called Astara.

This was, incidentally, exactly the kind of line we had been looking to bring into our Thompson Street location. But, not wanting to get overly excited about the line, I had Andrea send me home with a nice big jumble of samples so that I could experience the products as part of my daily routine.

Well, like I said, sometimes things just fall into place and I was head-over-heels from day one. Finding a product that a) works, b) is clean/non-toxic, c) is pleasant to use (i.e. no funky “au naturel” type smells…) and d) is perfect for my skin is very difficult to come by. Or at least it was, before Astara.

My favorite product is the Green Papaya Nutrient Mask. Formulated with extracts of Papain, Grapefruit, Sweet Orange, Lemongrass, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Vitamins B5, C and E, Comfrey, Calendula, Sugar Cane, Passion Fruit, Mango, Papaya, and Pineapple (phew thats a mouthful!), this mask is perfect for sensitive skin or troubled skin. Its enzymes work to gently exfoliate, while the vitamins and antioxidants refresh, soothe and moisturize.

I follow Andrea’s advice and use the Daily Refining Scrub to remove the mask. This helps slough off dead cells that were loosened by the mask’s enzymes. It is also a safer, more gentle way to exfoliate because the mask’s clay base acts as a barrier between your skin and the exfoliant. Additionally I just find the whole process luxuriant. My roommates are getting used to me “getting green” on a regular basis now.

Repost: Natural Product FAQs

This little “dictionary” was created for our employees here at Thompson Chemists a few years back. We’ve decided to repost it this week to go along with our natural product theme.

Natural Products FAQs

What is “natural” and why is it in quotes?
There is no standard measure that makes a product natural. Unfortunately being labeled “natural” does not mean a product is safe. Standards for being “natural” do exist. If a particular company is using a specific set of standards, they would display a logo or seal on their label. However, the best way to assess the product is to look at the ingredients.

What are parabens and why are they bad for you?
Parabens are a group of chemicals commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products. While generally deemed safe, they are chemically similar to estrogen and have been linked to tumor formation and breast cancer. At this time the FDA deems them safe at levels of up to 2%.

What does “cruelty-free” mean?
Cruelty-free means that the product was not tested on animals. Depending on the standards a company uses, it may mean they do not do business with any other companies that test on animals.

What about “no artificial ingredients”?
This is a marketing claim is similar to the one of being “natural.” Check the label and make your own observations.

What about organic?
Organic foods are produced according to certain production standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste, or sewage sludge, and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or food additives. Livestock are reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones. In most countries, organic produce must not be genetically modified. Organic cosmetics contain ingredients which were produced organically.
There are different seals or certifications a product can receive such as “USDA Organic” or “Oregon Tilth Organic” and each of these certifications have their own criteria. Products without certification are questionable. While they may contain some organic ingredients,  it is likely only a small percentage.

What does it mean for a product to be “vegan” or “vegan-friendly”?
A product is vegan when it contains no animal-derived ingredients. Common animal by-products include gelatin, lanolin, rennet, whey, casein, and shellac. Although honey, silk and beeswax are by definition animal products, some vegans consider their use and the use of other insect products to be acceptable.

What is fair trade?
Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach to alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a fair price to producers as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, and flowers.
